Prepare Your Vehicle for Transport
Before we pick up your car, there are a few easy things you need to do. This takes about 15 minutes and ensures a smooth, quick pickup and safe transport.
Photograph your vehicle from all angles for your records
Wash exterior so the driver can inspect for existing scratches and dings
Provide a set of keys -- ignition, trunk, and glove box
Disconnect or disable alarm systems to prevent delays during transport
Leave about 1/4 tank of gas -- enough for loading, not enough to add weight
Remove personal items, toll tags, radar detectors, and loose accessories
Non-running vehicle?
No problem. Our carriers are equipped with winches and forklifts for safe loading.
We Pick Up Your Car
When our carrier arrives at your designated location, here is exactly what happens. The whole process takes about 15-20 minutes.
Driver contacts you
Your assigned carrier will call ahead to confirm the pickup time and location. You will know exactly when to expect them.
Meet the driver
A designated representative must be present at pickup. The driver will introduce themselves and prepare for the vehicle inspection.
Joint inspection
You and the driver will walk around the vehicle together, noting any existing scratches, dings, or damage on the Bill of Lading.
Sign the Bill of Lading
This document records the condition of your vehicle at pickup. Both you and the driver sign it before the car is loaded.
Payment collected
Payment is collected when your vehicle is picked up. The price you were quoted is the price you pay -- guaranteed by ScottPrice Lock.
Vehicle loaded & tracked
Your car is carefully loaded onto the carrier. Contact us anytime to check the status of your shipment during transport.
We Deliver Your Car
Our driver will call you when your car is near the final destination. Once it arrives, a careful inspection is done to ensure everything looks good. Then simply sign the Bill of Lading to accept your delivery.
Driver calls ahead

Final inspection
A careful inspection is done together to ensure everything looks good and matches the Bill of Lading from pickup.

Open vs. Enclosed Auto Transport
The two primary methods for shipping a vehicle are open and enclosed transport. About 90% of vehicles are shipped via open carrier -- it is safe, reliable, and the most affordable option. Enclosed transport is the premium choice for high-value, classic, or exotic vehicles that need maximum protection.
Open Transport
Most Popular -- 90% of ShipmentsOpen carriers are the multi-level trailers you see on highways carrying 7-10 vehicles at a time. Your car is fully secured with professional tie-downs and driven by experienced haulers. While your vehicle is exposed to the elements during transit, the risk of damage is extremely low -- the same method is used by dealerships and manufacturers to ship brand-new cars from the factory.
Open transport is ideal for sedans, SUVs, trucks, minivans, and any standard vehicle you drive daily. The cost savings of 30-40% compared to enclosed make it the smart choice for most shipments.
Enclosed Transport
Premium ProtectionEnclosed carriers use fully sealed or soft-side trailers that completely shield your vehicle from weather, road debris, dust, and sun exposure. These carriers typically hold only 2-6 vehicles, providing more space and individual attention for each car during loading and unloading.
Enclosed is the go-to choice for luxury vehicles (Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini), classic and vintage cars, show and competition vehicles, recently restored builds, and any car valued above $50,000. If you would not park it outside overnight, ship it enclosed.
| Feature | Open Transport | Enclosed Transport |
|---|---|---|

Get a free quoteHow Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car?
The average cost to ship a car in the United States ranges from $500 to $1,500, with most customers paying around $1,000-$1,150 for a standard sedan on a 1,000-mile route. However, your exact price depends on several key factors. Understanding these will help you budget accurately and avoid surprises -- especially from companies that quote low and increase later.
Cost by Distance
Distance is the single biggest factor. The per-mile rate actually decreases on longer routes because carriers can consolidate loads and amortize fuel costs over more miles. Short hauls have the highest per-mile rates.
| Distance | Price Range | Per Mile | Est. Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 250 miles | $300 - $550 | $1.20 - $2.20 | 1-2 days |
| 250 - 500 miles | $400 - $700 | $0.80 - $1.40 | 2-3 days |
| 500 - 1,000 miles | $600 - $950 | $0.60 - $0.95 | 3-5 days |
| 1,000 - 1,500 miles | $750 - $1,100 | $0.50 - $0.73 | 5-7 days |
| 1,500 - 2,000 miles | $900 - $1,250 | $0.45 - $0.63 | 6-8 days |
| 2,000 - 2,500 miles | $1,000 - $1,350 | $0.40 - $0.54 | 7-9 days |
| Coast to Coast (2,500+) | $1,100 - $1,500 | $0.38 - $0.52 | 7-10 days |
* Prices reflect open transport for a standard sedan. Actual pricing varies by vehicle size, season, and route demand.
Cost by Vehicle Type
Larger and heavier vehicles take more space on the carrier and add weight, increasing costs. Specialty vehicles (luxury, classic, exotic) typically require enclosed transport for proper protection.
| Vehicle Type | Price Modifier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Civic, Camry, Accord) | Base rate | Smallest, lightest -- cheapest to ship |
| Coupe / Sports Car | Base rate | Similar to sedan unless low clearance |
| Midsize SUV (RAV4, CR-V) | +$50 - $100 | Slightly larger footprint |
| Full-Size SUV (Tahoe, Suburban) | +$100 - $200 | Takes more carrier deck space |
| Pickup Truck (F-150, RAM) | +$75 - $200 | Varies by cab and bed size |
| Luxury / Exotic | +$300 - $600 | Enclosed transport recommended |
| Classic / Vintage | +$300 - $500 | Enclosed, extra care at loading |
| Non-Running Vehicle | +$150 - $250 | Winch or forklift required |

How to Avoid Auto Transport Scams
The auto transport industry has a serious problem with bait-and-switch pricing, unlicensed brokers, and outright fraud. According to the FMCSA, thousands of consumer complaints are filed every year against auto transporters and brokers. Here is how to protect yourself and your money.
The Bait-and-Switch Problem
The most common scam in auto transport works like this: A company gives you an incredibly low quote -- $200-$400 below what everyone else is quoting. You book and pay a deposit. Then, 2-5 days later, they call and say the price has gone up because of "market conditions" or "no carriers available at that price." Now you are stuck: pay the higher price or forfeit your deposit and start over. The original quote was never real -- it was bait to get your deposit. At Scott's, we lock your price at booking and it never changes.
8 Red Flags to Watch For
If you spot any of these when researching an auto transport company, proceed with extreme caution.
Quote is significantly below market rate
The #1 bait-and-switch tactic. They quote $200-$400 below market to win your booking, then call 2-3 days later saying the price went up because of 'carrier availability' or 'fuel costs'. The original low price was never real.
Large upfront deposit required
Legitimate companies charge $0-$200 at booking. If someone asks for $500+ upfront before a carrier is even dispatched, that money may disappear. Some scam companies collect deposits and never arrange transport.
No FMCSA registration or MC number
Every legal auto transport company must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. If they cannot provide an MC number or it does not check out on SaferSys, walk away immediately.
Pressure to book immediately
Phrases like 'this price is only good for the next hour' or 'we have one spot left' are high-pressure sales tactics. Legitimate companies stand behind their quotes for at least 7 days.
Vague contract or no Bill of Lading
A proper transport contract outlines the price, pickup/delivery terms, insurance coverage, and cancellation policy. If they cannot send you a clear, written agreement before you pay, something is wrong.
No physical address or contact info
Real companies have physical offices, real phone numbers answered by real people, and verifiable business addresses. A company operating solely through a contact form with no phone number is a major red flag.
Reviews that are all 5-star or clearly fake
Check Google Reviews, BBB, and Transport Reviews for authentic feedback. Companies with only 5-star reviews and generic comments like 'Great service!' with no detail are likely fabricating reviews.
They refuse to explain their pricing
Ask: How is my price calculated? Is it locked? Are there fuel surcharges? What are the cancellation terms? Legitimate companies answer these questions openly. Scammers deflect or get vague.
How to Verify Any Auto Transport Company
Before handing over any personal information or payment, do these four checks. They take less than 5 minutes and can save you hundreds of dollars and weeks of headaches.
Check FMCSA Registration
Visit safer.fmcsa.dot.gov and search by company name or MC number. Verify they have active operating authority, valid insurance, and a satisfactory safety rating. This takes 30 seconds and eliminates 90% of scams.
Verify Insurance Coverage
Ask for a copy of their insurance certificate. Every carrier should have minimum $750,000 in cargo liability. If they are a broker, ask to see the carrier's insurance before dispatch. Do not take their word for it.
Read the Contract Carefully
Before signing anything, read every line. Look for clauses about price changes, hidden fees, fuel surcharges, and cancellation penalties. If the price is not explicitly locked in writing, it is not locked.
Call and Talk to a Real Person
Call their phone number. Is it answered by a real person or a voicemail? Can they answer detailed questions about the transport process? Legitimate companies have knowledgeable, U.S.-based support teams.

Common Industry Problems (and How We Solve Them)
The auto transport industry has real, systemic issues. We do not pretend these problems do not exist -- we address them head on.
Quote low to win the booking, then raise prices 20-50% after collecting your deposit. The initial price was never available -- it was a marketing number.
Every Scott's quote is reviewed by a live agent and locked at booking. Your price never changes. Period.
Process thousands of leads through automated quoting systems. No human reviews the price. When a carrier cannot be found at the quoted rate, the customer pays more.
Our team calculates real-time carrier availability and market conditions before quoting. We only quote prices we can actually honor.
Require $200-$500+ upfront before any carrier is assigned. Some companies collect deposits and delay dispatch for weeks, hoping you will cancel and forfeit the deposit.
Reserve your spot with $0 upfront. Add your payment method to hold your booking -- you're only charged when a carrier is confirmed and you approve the match.
After booking, you cannot reach anyone. Calls go to voicemail. Emails get auto-replies. When something goes wrong, there is no one to help.
Live, U.S.-based agents available 24/7 by phone. Every customer gets a dedicated transport coordinator who stays with you from booking through delivery.
"I got quotes from 6 companies. Scott's wasn't the cheapest, but they were the only one who gave me a real price. The others all raised it after I booked. With Scott's, the price I was quoted is exactly what I paid at pickup. No surprises. I will use them every time."

Who Ships Cars? (You Are Not Alone)
Over 4 million vehicles are shipped across the United States every year. Auto transport is not just for dealers and manufacturers -- everyday people ship their cars for all kinds of reasons.
People Relocating
Moving to a new state for work, family, or lifestyle? Shipping your car is almost always cheaper and easier than driving cross-country yourself when you factor in gas, hotels, meals, wear on your vehicle, and 2-4 lost days of your time.
Snowbirds & Seasonal Movers
Spend winters in Florida or Arizona and summers up north? Thousands of snowbirds ship their vehicles south every October-January and back north every March-May rather than making the grueling 20+ hour drive twice a year.
Online Car Buyers
Bought a car on Carvana, Vroom, Cars.com, or a private seller across the country? Auto transport is how you get it home. Dealers ship cars this way every single day -- now you can too, with the same professional carriers.
Military Families (PCS Moves)
Service members on Permanent Change of Station orders regularly ship privately owned vehicles. The military reimburses auto transport costs for qualifying moves. We work with military families every day and understand the process.
Dealers & Auction Buyers
Independent dealers, franchise dealerships, and auction buyers use auto transport to move inventory between lots, from auctions like Manheim and Copart, and to customer doorsteps. Volume discounts available for multiple vehicles.
Collector & Enthusiast Cars
Whether it is a barn find, a fully restored classic, a show car, or a weekend track toy, enclosed transport keeps your vehicle protected from road debris, weather, and UV exposure during transport.
8 Insider Tips to Save Money on Auto Transport
These are the same strategies our team shares with customers every day. Follow these tips and you will get the best price and the smoothest experience possible.
Book 2-3 Weeks Ahead
The best carrier availability and pricing comes when you book 2-3 weeks before your needed pickup date. Last-minute bookings (under 1 week) may cost 10-20% more due to limited carrier options.
Be Flexible on Dates
Offering a 3-5 day pickup window instead of a single date dramatically increases carrier availability and can reduce your price by $50-$100. More carriers can bid on your route when dates are flexible.
Ship in Off-Peak Months
February, March, October, and November are the cheapest months for auto transport. The exact same route that costs $1,200 in July might be $850 in February. If your timeline is flexible, time it right.
Terminal Pickup Saves Money
If you live within 30 minutes of a carrier terminal, terminal-to-terminal service saves $75-$150 versus door-to-door. The tradeoff is you drop off and pick up yourself.
Skip the Extras You Don't Need
Expedited service, top-load positioning, and guaranteed dates all add cost. For most standard vehicles and timelines, the base door-to-door open transport service is all you need.
Get 3 Quotes Minimum
Always compare at least 3 quotes from different companies. If one quote is significantly lower than the others, it is almost certainly a bait-and-switch. The real market price is where 2-3 quotes converge.
Check for Route Discounts
Some routes are cheaper than others because carriers naturally travel those corridors for dealer inventory moves. NY-FL, CA-TX, and IL-AZ are high-traffic routes with better pricing and faster pickup times.
Read the Contract Before Signing
Look specifically for: Is the price locked? What are the cancellation terms? Are there fuel surcharges? What insurance is provided? Who is liable for damage? A legitimate company puts all of this in writing.
Understanding the Bill of Lading (BOL)
The Bill of Lading is the single most important document in your auto transport shipment. It is both a receipt and a legal contract between you and the carrier. Here is what it contains and why each section matters:
Vehicle Condition Report
A detailed diagram where the driver marks every existing scratch, dent, chip, and area of damage on your vehicle before loading. This is your baseline proof of condition.
Pickup & Delivery Details
Addresses, dates, contact information, and any special instructions for both locations. Confirms the agreed-upon logistics.
Transport Terms & Pricing
The agreed price, payment method, and payment timing. At Scott's, this confirms your locked price collected at pickup.
Insurance & Liability Info
The carrier's insurance details and liability terms. This section outlines what is covered and how to file a claim if needed.
Signatures Required
Both you (or your representative) and the carrier driver must sign at pickup and again at delivery. Never sign a blank BOL.
Delivery Condition Notes
At delivery, any new damage is noted on the BOL before you sign. This is your proof for any insurance claim. Inspect carefully.

Car Shipping FAQ
Everything you need to know about shipping your vehicle. Can't find your answer? Our team is available 24/7.
The average cost to ship a car in the United States is between $500 and $1,500, with most customers paying around $1,000-$1,150. The main factors are distance (the per-mile rate decreases on longer hauls), vehicle size (SUVs and trucks cost $50-$200 more than sedans), transport type (enclosed adds 30-60%), seasonal demand (summer and January are peak), and route popularity (major corridors like NY-FL are cheaper than rural routes). At Scott's, you get an exact, locked-in price upfront -- no estimates that change later.
Transit times depend on distance. Under 500 miles: 1-3 days. 500-1,000 miles: 3-7 days. 1,000-2,000 miles: 5-10 days. Coast to coast (2,500+ miles): 7-14 days. These are carrier transit times after pickup. Factor in a 1-3 business day pickup window from the date of booking (rural areas may require 3-5 days). Expedited pickup (1-2 days) is available for an additional fee. Weather, road conditions, and carrier routes can affect timing, but we keep you updated throughout.
Yes. Every carrier in Scott's network is required to carry a minimum of $750,000 in cargo insurance, which covers your vehicle from the moment it is loaded to the moment it is delivered. This is verified before any carrier is dispatched. You will receive a Bill of Lading at pickup that documents your vehicle's condition. If any damage occurs during transport, we handle the claims process on your behalf at no cost to you. For additional peace of mind, you can purchase supplemental gap coverage through our partner.
The Bill of Lading (BOL) is the most important document in your shipment. It is the official record of your vehicle's condition at both pickup and delivery, signed by you and the carrier driver. At pickup, you and the driver walk around your vehicle together, noting any existing scratches, dings, or damage. At delivery, you do the same inspection and compare. If any new damage is found, you note it on the BOL before signing -- this is your proof for any insurance claim. Never sign without inspecting first.
Most carriers allow a small amount of personal items in the trunk only -- typically one box under 100 pounds. However, carrier cargo insurance does NOT cover personal belongings inside the vehicle. Items left in the cabin can also shift during transport and potentially damage your interior. We strongly recommend shipping personal items separately via USPS, UPS, or a moving company. If you must ship items in the trunk, keep the total under 100 lbs and do not stack items above the window line.
We regularly transport non-running, inoperable, and salvage vehicles. Our carriers have winch equipment and in some cases forklifts to safely load vehicles that cannot start, steer, or roll. There is an additional fee of $150-$250 depending on the specific equipment needed. Let us know the vehicle's condition when requesting a quote so we can match you with an appropriately equipped carrier.
Every carrier in Scott's network is FMCSA-licensed, bonded, and insured. We verify MC numbers, insurance certificates, and safety ratings before dispatching any carrier. You can independently verify any carrier at the FMCSA's SaferSys database (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov). We never dispatch to carriers with unsatisfactory safety ratings or lapsed insurance. Scott's Auto Carrier operates under MC #707909 and USDOT #3945498.
A carrier is the company that physically owns the truck and transports your vehicle. A broker (like Scott's) is the intermediary that connects you with carriers, handles logistics, provides customer support, and ensures quality control. The advantage of working with a broker is access to a nationwide network of vetted carriers instead of being limited to one company's trucks and routes. A good broker provides price guarantees, handles claims, and gives you a single point of contact throughout your shipment.
You can choose a preferred first available date for pickup. We work to dispatch a carrier as close to that date as possible, typically within 1-3 business days. Exact date guarantees depend on carrier availability and route. For delivery, transit times are estimated based on distance and route, but road conditions, weather, and multi-stop routes can cause variation. We keep you updated with real-time notifications throughout.
Delays can happen due to weather, traffic, mechanical issues, or other stops on the carrier's route. If a carrier is running behind schedule, we proactively notify you with an updated ETA. Your price never changes due to delays. If a carrier cannot make your pickup window at all, we reassign to another carrier at no additional cost to you.
Someone must be present at both pickup and delivery to inspect the vehicle and sign the Bill of Lading. This can be you or any authorized adult representative -- a friend, family member, coworker, or building manager. If your schedule is tight, let your coordinator know and we can often arrange a window that works.
Cancellation is free at any time before a carrier has been dispatched. After a carrier is dispatched and en route to your pickup, a cancellation fee of $150 may apply to cover the carrier's deadhead costs. Rescheduling is usually free if done with at least 24-48 hours notice before the scheduled pickup.
